19th century Trumeau Mirror
$2.400,00
This intriguing French trumeau (or ‘pier glass’) mirror dates from the 19th century, and would have originally been set into the wood panelling or wall space between two windows, or over the fireplace mantel. It is very typical of its time, combining decorative, wooden and gilded stucco elements on its top half with a glass mirror below. This configuration was designed to amplify the light of a candle set before it, to add a reflective, decorative element to the wall, and to allow additional light to be thrown into the room.
This example features an oil on canvas depiction of a mountain hamlet on its top half. Please note that, in keeping with its age, there is some wear and damage to the piece, with yellowed glassware and tarnished mirror, together with some damage to the frame.
