French vintage Majolica Asparagus Drainer and Platter
SOLD
A rather quirky, but very functional, late 19th century majolica asparagus drainer (or cradle), and separate platter, featuring a realistic raised relief design with asparagus spears and ribbons. The centre is punched with holes for draining the water from the steamed asparagus spears, and the drainer rests on decorative raised feet over a separate platter. Thought to be originate from the Balearic island of Mallorca, majolica is a richly coloured, heavyweight clay pottery, which is coated with enamel, ornamented with paints and finally glazed.
