18th Century Louis XVI French Walnut Bergere Chair

$5.300,00

This very decorative Louis XVI Bergère armchair is beautifully crafted from oak and dates from the 18th century. Elegant and comfortable, it has been exquisitely hand-carved, with exceptional detailing throughout. The slightly curved medallion backrest is topped with an exuberant garlanded ‘ribbon’ at its crest, and is set within an intricate border that has been carved with a ‘twisted ribbon’ motif as it sweeps downwards in luxurious curves to meet the upholstered arm rests. These feature a highly detailed classical motif on their lower portions, and terminate in daisy-carved paterae at the top of each leg. The upholstery is full of character, and features a delightful motif of pink tulips with green foliage, set within a pale blue geometric framework against a cream background. The drop-in seat cushion is well padded for comfort, its wonderfully wide dimensions being designed to accommodate the exceptionally voluminous dresses so beloved by ladies of the period. The chair is supported by four turned and fluted tapering legs, terminating on a turned ‘toupie’ foot. A very pretty chair, and one that would add a particular touch of French finesse to a stylish bedroom.
