An unusual and attractive 19th century gilt bronze candle holder, or ‘chamberstick’, circular in form and featuring rich ornamentation throughout. A wide and chiseled band adorns the outside edge, while the centre is encrusted with motifs of fantastical sea creatures and foliage within a six- petalled border. The central candle sconce features a delicately fluted rim, which flares gently outwards over a narrow body, richly decorated with a geometric floral design. The handle is a marvel of imagination, and takes the form of an outstretched mermaid, supporting a shell.
