A pair of porcelain Apothecary Jars
$2.100,00
A pair of Limoges style white porcelain lidded apothecary jars, with elegant hand- painted Latin lettering and evocative tropical scenes. At the centre of the design is a Caduceus, which is the traditional symbol of Hermes, featuring two snakes winding around a winged staff, and which has long been associated with medicine. There are also snakes entwined around the palm trees, which is common on 19th century pharmaceutical labels, a reminder perhaps of the exotic origins of many drugs. These antique pharmacy pots were once used to store medicines, oils, and other liquids, and their design is very particular to France.
