A stunning 18th Century Giltwood Holy Water Stoup
$5.300,00
An imposing 18th century carved and gilded wooden stoup, with a finely detailed and expressive representation of Christ on his cross at the centre, carved from bone. Originally a small basin for holy water, especially on the wall near the door of a Roman Catholic church, a stoup allowed worshippers to dip their fingers in the water before crossing themselves. This striking example has a small dish incorporated into the design at the base, flanked by rich carvings of grapevines and ears of wheat. At the top, the celestial bodies of the sun and wind crown the scene. There are some small chips and areas of damage, in keeping with its age, and the upper section would benefit from some restoration.
