18th Century French Louis XVI Marquetry Commode
$4.450,00
An exceptionally beautiful marquetry inlaid commode ‘à Ressaut’ opening with two wide drawers, and crafted in the Louis XVI style. This very decorative end of 18th century chest of drawers features a central projection at the front, and rests on four tapering legs terminating in bronze-sheathed feet. The marquetry is exquisite, and is set in a diagonal geometric design radiating outwards from each drawer panel, with intricately veneered ‘knots’ at each corner. The same geometric design decorates each side of the chest, while delicate veneer ‘fillets’ applied between the drawers, on each side, and on the shaped apron, enhance the design still further. The pull handles and escutcheons are elaborately styled from finely chiseled gilt bronze, while the chest is topped with a shaped and polished top of grey-veined marble. There have been some small repairs and areas of restoration in places, as might be expected with a piece of furniture of this age.
