19th Century Louis XVI Marquetry Commode with Marble Top
$5.700,00
A petite and most elegant Louis XVI-style two-drawer ‘Commode Sauteuse’ in veneered wood and marquetry, with marble top and ornate gilt brass fittings. This curiously named style of commode always features two drawers perched on high legs, which gives the amusing impression that the chest of drawers is ready to jump (‘sauter’), like a frog. Exquisitely finished with contrasting marquetry wood veneers in diagonal slants and geometric banding across both drawer fronts, each one features a wealth of decorative brass mounts including ribbon-topped escutcheons and elaborate ‘portrait’ pull-handles draped with laurel garlands. The two drawers have been crafted with traditional dovetail joints, and are lined with beautifully aged crimson velvet. The chamfered top is crafted from creamy-white marble, veined with grey, and the commode sits on four straight, tapering legs. Please note that there is some age-related marking to the veneer on the side of the commode.
